eDIA

Information and communication technologies provide new opportunities that can revolutionize education in general and the educational assessment and evaluation process in particular. As a result, the development of new generation educational assessment and evaluation technologies has begun, which may lead to a significant change in educational assessment and evaluation even in the short term. The use of the online electronic diagnostic system (eDia) developed as part of the project may provide a number of new opportunities in teachers’ day-to-day work from planning the teaching/learning process to criterion-oriented evaluation of learners’ performance. A general browser and internet connection are sufficient for use in classroom instruction and in school. Computer-based tests make it possible to use a greater variety of item types than before. For example, children will be able not only to read the instructions to the items, but also to hear them, so the tests can also be used among learners who cannot yet read or who suffer from reading difficulties. In addition to sounds, images, animation, and video lend the items a richer and more real-world quality. Learners will be able to give answers to the items in different forms; for example, they can mark, click, colour, move items, or rearrange them. The eDia system is therefore suited to mediating not only simple multiple-choice items, but also item types that make maximum use of the new options provided by technology. This opens doors to studying knowledge and skill domains researched previously in an innovative, new environment, which is more motivating for the learners (e.g. language abilities and musical literacy) as well as exploring features of skills not yet studied (e.g. dynamic problem-solving ability). By making use of the options in electronic testing, the eDia system will be capable of supplying rapid feedback on learners’ knowledge and skill levels. With its state-of-the-art technology and web applications, the platform opens new perspectives for transforming classroom activities and effectively aiding teachers in their day-to-day instructional work and in carrying out assessment tasks. The eDia system makes it possible to monitor learners’ development continually, to indicate potential delays accurately, and to tailor teaching to the individual.
